I thought that the best way to get people’s attention would be a staggering topic! I am in no way inciting or giving directions on organizing anything of the sort, but I want to explore some hidden truths about power.
In the African society, forceful power shifts have been witnessed in different states since independence and they continue to present times. The reason behind such actions is never a sudden sense of injustice but a progressive kind of social discomfort. Often the leaders to be ousted are too preoccupied and disillusioned to hear the cries of the people, thus end up being caught pants down. Future consequences such as them being ousted from power by the very people who brought them to the top are the result of their present tyranny. How they live today affects their tomorrow.
Before going any further let me again give a disclaimer: I am not suggesting a Coup in my country!
That said, Kenya is heading for an election that is special in its own right; the new government is expected to implement a new constitutional dispensation. As usual, there are many promises being made and all focus seems to be on March 4th. I will not downplay the need to emphasise on the elections and the leaders we get then, but I want to address a need so often ignored. What are the small character flaws that can make the winning candidates to fall? I am writing specifically to those vying for office or those planning to do so in the near future.
Many enter office and forget what took them there in the first place. African states are known to have leaders who only become active during election years and the only issues they seem concerned with are those that appear to disrupt their power-they forget service and seek the trappings of power. As I stated earlier, uprisings do not just come suddenly but from a continued state of discomfort; our nation has been in an oppressed state for fifty years now and the effects are slowly bubbling under. If the recurrence of striking workers, the many court petitions against sitting members of parliament and clashes that keep popping up is something to go by, the next leaders are in for a surprise-unless they read the signs of the times and change!
The bible has many incidences where power changed hands as a result of what the leaders did or failed to do. There was a time Assyria had gone to war against Judah and the Lord gave Isaiah a prophecy about the fall of Assyria based on their present actions. Despite being mighty and their kingdom having been established for a long time, they would tumble in a short while. Just as mighty states are overthrown overnight, Assyria would fall in a short period, in fact the Lord used a new-born baby named Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz, born of a prophetess, to illustrate how fast the kingdom would fall. Scripture says,
Isaiah 8:4 For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, ‘My father’ and ‘My mother,’ the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be taken away before the king of Assyria.
God reveals to prophet Isaiah the reasons why Assyria would be defeated in the future based on the present actions with regards to different things. I will enter a political space often ignored or overlooked and in the coming posts I seek to disrupt the common thinking about power and servant hood. Again, I say this, by ignoring certain things that appear small and inconsequential, governments have been overthrown-wake up!
My Hope is in…..
…the Lord, that would be my answer and is so for many people. But it is easier said than done. I once heard someone say that “virginity is the lack of opportunity”, which to me was a big lie. However, when put in context, this statement holds stunning truth which has been proven for the last 50 years in Kenya. When politicians are vying for political office, they come out as saints, promising to do away with the socio-economic problems that have plagued our beautiful country. However, all this changes as soon as they step into office and all they seem to care about is self-preservation. Their trust in money is often seen by how they allocate themselves hefty salaries, sendoff packages and even change laws to keep them from paying taxes. Many politicians go to the extent of using their wealth to break the rules, they disregard traffic rules, they organize illegal protests and publicly incite people without caring about the rules of the land.
During this election season I have also noticed how politicians put their trust in man. Parties are taking tribal angels and depending on their tribesmen to put them in power forgetting that our country has a huge mix of tribes. Alliances are formed on the basis of tribal pull and so these politicians depend on each other’s tribal hold to gain power. Elective posts are being given to those perceived to have power as opposed to the people’s choice. The nomination exercise was marred with irregularities as favoritism seemed to rule the day; political parties openly chose candidates they had put trust in instead of those fairly elected.
The sad consequence of putting our trust in money and in men is that there is a growing disconnect between leaders and the rest of the people. This disconnect breeds unrest which slowly boils over to sad events. Man in himself is selfish and will always put himself before anyone else; we seek a sense of security and often disregard the needs of others. I am not just blaming politicians but we all have this in us, we just haven’t been given that political office…remember the saying, “virginity is the lack of opportunity”. That is why I will not point fingers rather I will offer solutions. Reduce the differences between you in power and me the common man-I will never hold anything against you.
The Assyrians trusted in mediums and wizards to tell them of their future. Their hope was based on people and material things and not on God. It is for this reason that God says they would despair during times of trouble and lack; unless our minds and hearts are grounded on God, we are certainly going to fall into chaos.
Our true gift is our thinking and what happens to us in life is a manifestation of our thinking. We therefore need to renew our thinking and base it on God’s word. The only way to hope in the Lord is by knowing Him more through His word. The more I understand that He will take care of the office I run , the people I lead and the financial needs I have, I begin to serve rather than hoard. Unless light that comes from God checks into our lives, all we end up seeing is gloom and missed opportunities. Our positions in power are only propelled by seeing light at the end of the tunnel and when we fail to see the light, everything begins to break down. My power is based on my hope in the Lord; thinking out of sync with God makes everything chaotic.
Isaiah 8:19-22 And when they say to you, “Seek those who are mediums and wizards, why whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living? To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. They will pass through it hard-pressed and hungry; and it shall happen, when they are hungry, that they will be enraged and curse their king and their God, and look upward. Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom and anguish; and they will be driven into darkness.
In previous blogs I have written extensively on how to build that relationship with God in prayer, His word and fellowship, make time to read through, it will help you as a leader and a leader to be; I would love to see this shared with aspiring political candidates and engage on the topic, have a blessed week.
Ecclesiastes 1:16-18 I communed with my heart saying, “Look I have attained greatness and have gained more wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My heart has understood great wisdom and knowledge.” And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceive that this also is grasping for the wind. For in much wisdom is much grief, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
It would not be fair to leave you with this information and let you try to change by your own wisdom and strength-it is like chasing the wind. Only in Jesus Christ does all this make sense and by the guidance of the Holy Spirit will we know the way to go. Say this prayer and receive a new life..
Heavenly Father, I come to You in the Name of Jesus. Your Word says, “Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Acts 2:21). I am calling on You. I pray and ask Jesus to come into my heart and be Lord over my life, according to Romans 10:9-10—”If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” I do that now. I confess that Jesus is Lord, and I believe in my heart that God raised Him from the dead.
I am now reborn! I am a Christian—a child of Almighty God! I am saved! You also said in Your Word, “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11:13). I am also asking You to fill me with the Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit, rise up within me as I praise God. I fully expect to speak with other tongues as You give me utterance (Acts 2:4).
The prayer was obtained from the Kenneth Copeland Ministries.
